The Space Race

Space exploration in the 1960s was dominated by a race between the United States and Soviet Union to see who could reach the Moon first. Teachers who participate in this program will learn about the technologies needed to fly to the Moon as they construct paper models of the Saturn V rocket, design and build their own “lunar landing craft,” and perform hands-on activities that detail the challenges of space suit design. Other topics include social and political factors that affected the decision to go to the Moon and major exploration programs of that era.
