Night Vision Goggle Training System (NVGTS)

Use of Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) can greatly increase the aviator's ability to see in low light conditions. Unfortunately, NVGs do not provide perfect vision, and their use brings a number of new concerns to night operations. Specialized training in the use of NVGs is required to reduce hazards and increase efficiency in night operations.

Training Description
  • Automated academic instruction on night vision goggle capabilities, limitations and operational use.
  • NVG goggle pre-flight inspection, fitting and adjustment, and focusing
  • Practical and interactive instruction as the trainees view a simulated landscape with night vision goggles

Automated Academic Presentation

The automated academic presentation provides students instruction on how night vision goggles work, capabilities and limitations of night vision goggles, proper use of night vision goggles, and potential illusions and misperceptions that may be experienced during night vision goggle flight operations.

The fully automated program lasts approximately one and one half (1.5) hours and provides an informative and entertaining learning experience for the trainees. The advanced computer presentation system provides both the images and the narration to form a complete training package (automatic mode). The instructor also has the option of using the computer-generated images, but providing the lecture himself (manual mode). After the academic presentation, the trainees are ready to achieve full learning benefit from the terrain model board exercise (area three of the NVGT system).

Pre-flight Inspection, Fitting and Adjustment, and Focusing Area

This area provides for specific training in NVG preflight checks, fine adjustment of the goggles, proper handling, and goggle response to various light sources.

Practical and Interactive Instruction

This segment demonstrates many ground and air viewing conditions during flight while using NVGs. The training is designed to provide real experience, and not simply demonstration of principles.

Specifically designed exercises demonstrate to the trainee the problems inherent in both flying and ground conditions, while flying at night. Considerable attention has been given to the board modeling to generate all the effects encountered in both unaided night vision and NVG flying.
